CO2-reduced steel

Its almost complete recyclability makes steel a material of choice for a circular economy. However, for technical reasons, substantial amounts of CO2 are released in the conventional production of steel. As a result, the majority of the CO2 footprint of our tubular products is already emitted in the upstream manufacturing chain during starting material production. The use of low-emission steel therefore represents the greatest lever for reducing the CO2 footprint of our products.
Our Group parent company, Salzgitter AG, which supplies us with coils as pre-material for welded steel tubes through Salzgitter Flachstahl, has already begun the transformation towards climate-friendly steel production. With the SALCOS®(Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) program, the entire steel production process is being aligned to be climate-friendly on the basis of green hydrogen. As a result, our welded tube products will gradually have a significantly lower CO2 footprint from 2026. From 2033 the footprint of our starting material will thus be reduced by 95 % compared with the base year 2018.
In order to be able to offer our customer emission-reduced products in the meantime, we are already working with further excellent input material suppliers - especially for our seamless products. As part of development projects, we are working together with the Group's own research institute Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung to ensure that, despite innovative steel manufacturing processes, we continue to produce precision steel tubes of the highest quality. Thanks to this development work, we are already able to offer our customers the first emission-reduced precision steel tubes. In addition, our product portfolio based on reduced-emission steel is continuously growing to include further steel grades.
Leading the
transformation
Since 2015, we have been working with partners from industry and research on the path to virtually climate-neutral steel production. The core of the program is the switch from coal-based steel production to hydrogen-powered direct reduction plants and electricity from renewable sources. By the end of 2033, we will be technically able to reduce our CO2 emissions by around 95 percent.
Our SALCOS® brand stands for physically CO2-reduced green steel products from the Salzgitter Group with a clear product promise and transparent certification. It is the strong result of our vision to transform the industry together with our customers and make a real contribution to decarbonisation. Green steel products can already be sourced from the Group's electric arc furnace route. Steel products from the transformation programme of the same name will follow from 2026.
