On 6th January 2021, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) announced a ban on the manufacture, use and distribution in commerce of 5 Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic (PBT) substances including articles containing these substances (Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and Toxic (PBT) Chemicals under TSCA Section 6(h) | US EPA). The ban affects the following substances:
- Phenol, isopropylated phosphate (3:1) (PIP (3:1)) CAS 68937-41-7 (Complete ban)
- Decabromodiphenyl ether (DecaBDE) CAS 1163-19-5 (Complete ban)
- 2,4,6-Tris(tert-butyl) phenol (2,4,6-TTBP) CAS 732-26-3 (Limit value = 0.3% w/w)
- Hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) CAS 87-68-3 (Complete ban)
- Pentachlorothiophenol (PCTP) CAS 133-49-3 (Limit value = 1% w/w)
Mannesmann Precision Tubes GmbH, Mannesmann Precision Tubes France SAS, Mannesmann Precision Tubes Netherlands B.V. and Mannesmannröhren-Werk GmbH have asked their suppliers to confirm that their supplied materials do not contain the banned substances above the permitted thresholds. On the basis of the suppliers’ answers received, they can confirm to the best of their knowledge that none of the above substances are contained in either the precision steel tubes they produce or in their packaging. This information does not constitute a declaration of conformity. This declaration is made exclusively on the basis of supplier information.
In addition, Mannesmann Precision Tubes GmbH, Mannesmann Precision Tubes France SAS, Mannesmann Precision Tubes Netherlands B.V. and Mannesmannröhren-Werk GmbH have carried out random chemical analyses on a sampling of tubes and packaging of their mills in Germany, France and Netherland to determine the presence of the PBT substances banned by EPA. At the time of the tests carried out, none of the above-mentioned substances were detected in the precision steel tubes produced by them nor in their packaging. Again, this is not a declaration of conformity.
